- Minister for Fisheries closes fishing at popular South Coast beach to improve safety and tourism
- Greens Pool ranked in the 2018 TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Awards' top 15 beaches in Australia and best beach in the Great Southern region
- Safe and accessible recreational fishing locations remain available nearby
Tourism opportunities at one of Western Australia's best beaches is set to improve with the Minister for Fisheries approving a fishing closure at Greens Pool near Denmark, in recognition of its popularity as a swimming and snorkelling site for locals and tourists.
The Minister met with shire and community representatives at the unique South Coast beach today, to announce the closure ahead of the start of the summer school holidays on Thursday (December 13).
Greens Pool is ranked in Australia's top 15 beaches in the 2018 TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Awards and the best beach in the Great Southern region. The fishing closure in the idyllic beach destination is aimed at improving safety after the local community raised serious concerns about conflicts between swimmers and spearfishers.
A petition signed by more than 960 people was received by the Minister, calling for protection of the postcard perfect destination as a safe swimming spot. Each year, more than 350,000 people visit Denmark and almost 50 per cent of those visitors spend time at Denmark's beautiful beaches.
Fishing spots are still available nearby for keen anglers, on adjacent beaches east and west of Greens Pool. Popular nearby fishing spots include Elephant Rocks, which is a short stroll away, while Waterfalls Bay and Madfish Bay are five to 10 minutes' drive from Greens Pool.
Comments attributed to Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly:
"Greens Pool is a unique location which is highly valued by the local community and the more than 350,000 visitors that visit Denmark each year.
"The tranquil waters provide an ideal, safe location for people to swim, snorkel and observe the local marine life. It is also recognised as one of Western Australia's postcard perfect beaches.
"With other fishing locations close by, this closure is a common sense move. The decision allows for the appreciation of the marine environment, without the risk of interaction with fishing lines and spear guns.
"I'm excited to have this closure in place ahead of visitation to the area reaching its peak over summer. Swimming lessons are held in Greens Pool during the school holiday period and where families traditionally enjoy their annual Christmas/New Year beach holiday."
