    • Tenders called for replacement bridge in Subiaco
    • Added capacity for cyclists and pedestrians crossing Fremantle Line
    • Enhanced connections to Inner City College and future Subi East precinct

The tender for a new road bridge to connect the future Subi East precinct with West Leederville has now been released.

The new bridge will replace the existing 99-year-old timber bridge that crosses the Fremantle Line on Hamilton Street in Subiaco.

Industry has been invited to prepare and submit proposals for the removal and replacement of the Hamilton Road Bridge, with construction work on the new structure expected to start in early 2019.

Improved pedestrian and cycling access will be a key upgrade for the new structure, which will provide linkages to the Fremantle Line principal shared path and to the future Inner City College.

The new bridge will comprise of two 3.5-metre traffic lanes, two 1.2-metre shoulder lanes, a three-metre shared path on the west side and a three-metre footpath on the east side of the new bridge.

Safety improvements such as sight distances, layout and drainage will also be made at the Hamilton Road and Railway Parade intersection.

Following the tender evaluation, a contract will be awarded late in 2018 with project completion expected in mid-2019.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The routine replacement of the century-old Hamilton Road Bridge over the railway line is a chance to add capacity for cyclists and pedestrians, while improving safety for local motorists.

"The Inner City College and Subi East projects will bring more cyclists and pedestrians through the area and this upgrade will make their commute significantly safer.

"As well as the bridge upgrade, there will be new connections to the existing shared path network and an extension to the existing underpass on the southern side of the bridge.

"All road users will benefit from the design improvements to accommodate turning movements for all vehicles and lighting upgrades in the vicinity of the bridge."
