    Pilbara consultation to tackle homelessness

    3/10/2018 4:30 PM
    • Service providers and people who have experienced homelessness can have their say on the State Government's 10-year homelessness strategy
    • Strategy the first of its kind in WA - long-term and co-authored by the community sector, cross-government and people who have actually experienced homelessness

People living in the Pilbara region and who have worked in the homelessness sector or experienced homelessness can attend a community consultation tomorrow (October 4) from 11am to 2pm at South Hedland Lotteries House.

The consultation is part of the development of the State Government's 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness. The strategy is being designed through a partnership between government, peak bodies and the community sector through the Supporting Communities Forum Working Group on Homelessness.

This strategy will emphasise how policy can be set and services provided differently and better. It will also examine homelessness in a broader context alongside other areas of government including health, mental health, education and justice.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics' Census of Population and Housing: Estimating Homelessness (2016) report shows that there were 664 homeless people in the Pilbara area on Census night in 2016.

Comments attributed to Community Services Minister Simone McGurk:

"Addressing homelessness is a key priority for this Government and that is why I want a robust long-term strategy to tackle this important issue.

"Hearing the stories and ideas of people who have experienced homelessness or worked in the sector is a key part of developing a long-term plan to address this important issue.

"People experiencing or at risk of homelessness have complex needs that can only be met through an integrated response from service providers and government agencies.

"The new strategy will aim to strengthen the services system by improving communication, collaboration, co-ordination, and most importantly it will clearly identify evidenced based approaches that best support those experiencing homelessness."

Comment attributed to Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"It is fantastic that the McGowan Government is committed to listening to people and addressing this issue that affects so many people across our Pilbara."
