    More carbon farming funding opportunities

    • Carbon farming opportunity reminder for pastoralists ahead of next Emissions Reduction Fund auction
    • In-principle support offered for 15 carbon farming projects on pastoral leases in the previous round

Western Australian pastoralists planning to develop carbon farming projects are reminded the deadline is looming for the eighth national Emissions Reduction Fund auction.

The McGowan Government has extended its support for Western Australian pastoralists wanting to sequester carbon through projects which increase the regeneration of native vegetation.

Following an announcement of in-principle support for pilot human induced regeneration sequestration offset projects by the McGowan Government in April, 15 pastoral lessees went on to successfully compete in the national auction. These were predominantly across the Mid-West, Gascoyne and Goldfields regions.

Applications for the Federal Government's next Emissions Reduction Fund auction close on Friday, October 26.

Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"The McGowan Government is encouraging pastoralists to focus on grazing strategies which promote regeneration of native vegetation and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

"Carbon farming provides a real prospect that depleted rangelands soil and vegetation can be turned around and productivity restored.

"Western Australian pastoralists successfully registered for more than $45 million worth of carbon farming projects in the seventh carbon abatement auction.

"This upcoming auction provides similar opportunity for WA pastoralists to secure WA's share and put forward their projects for consideration."

Comments attributed to Lands Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The State, as the land owner, is continuing its work to consider eligible projects, after which a final determination will be made on the provision of interest holder consent.

"Considerations have included the State reserving the right to receive a return on the project value and coexistence with the mining sector."
