    Attorney General John Quigley has today announced the appointment of Joshua Thomson SC as the Solicitor General of Western Australia.


    The appointment is for a term of five years and fills the vacancy left behind by Peter Quinlan SC, who was appointed Chief Justice of Western Australia in August.

    "Mr Thomson SC is a highly experienced legal practitioner within the profession. His experience, enthusiasm and intellect are a perfect fit for this important role.


    "He was born in Sydney and attended Christ Church Grammar School in Claremont.


    "In 1994, Mr Thomson achieved a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from UWA and was awarded the Hackett Scholarship and other various prizes. Mr Thomson also achieved a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford, Magdalen College in 1996.


    "Mr Thomson was admitted to practice in Western Australia in 1995, and practised at the then Crown Solicitor's Office of WA until 2001, including in the position of Assistant Crown Counsel.


    "In 2001 Mr Thomson joined the Independent Bar, and has practised as an independent barrister since that time. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2012.


    "Mr Thomson practices in a broad range of matters in all superior Courts. He has experience in, amongst other areas, constitutional law; administrative law; native title; taxation; State Agreements; statutory construction; and regulatory and competition law.


    "He has appeared as counsel in a number of significant matters in a wide variety of practice areas, including matters of constitutional and administrative law contractual disputes; corporations and corporate insolvency; construction and building disputes; insurance law and torts; maritime law and regulatory and competition disputes; and important matters concerning statutory construction and civil procedure.


    "He has also acted on a pro bono basis over the years for the benefit of the Western Australian community, and has a significant community ethos.


    "The interests of the State Government and our community will be well served with Mr Thomson as Solicitor General.
