- $600,431 Lotterywest grant presented to Bunbury Dolphin Discovery Centre Inc
- Funding to complement the State Government's existing $12.3 million investment in the redevelopment of the centre
Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan and Bunbury MLA Don Punch today presented a $600,431 Lotterywest grant to the Dolphin Discovery Centre in Bunbury, to complement the State Government's upgrade and expansion of the iconic tourism facility.
The redevelopment of the Dolphin Discovery Centre is well underway, with the McGowan Government already contributing $12.3 million to the project.
The funding boost from Lotterywest will help to ensure the best possible marine experience at the redeveloped centre.
The redevelopment includes a landmark new-look building, a new interpretive centre, new exhibits including 13 aquariums, a new café, educational facilities and beach access.
The McGowan Government has put local procurement at the heart of the Dolphin Discovery Centre project, with 46 local contractors and suppliers to be engaged by local contractor Perkins Builders throughout the main build.
The Dolphin Discovery Centre is on track to reopen to the public in December. It is being revamped as part of stage one of the Transforming Bunbury's Waterfront project.
Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
"The Dolphin Discovery Centre is the country's premier wild dolphin experience and a major tourism drawcard for Bunbury and the South-West.
"Thanks to investment from the State Government, Lotterywest and funding partners, this iconic facility will soon be able to offer an even better tourism and educational experience.
"The McGowan Government's focus on local procurement has also paid off in this project, providing a major boost for local contractors and suppliers."
Comments attributed to Bunbury MLA Don Punch:
"The Dolphin Discovery Centre has long been a fantastic asset for our community, as a tourism drawcard, as an education facility and as an affordable outing for families, so this additional funding from Lotterywest is a great outcome for Bunbury.
"A significant portion of this grant will provide improved systems and supports for the volunteers that are the backbone of the Dolphin Discovery Centre, and it is especially pleasing to see Lotterywest funds being used to recognise the contribution of volunteers to our community.
"This redevelopment will deliver a facility that has vastly improved accessibility for all members of our community, an outcome that is being assisted by this funding.
"Everyone involved with the project is committed to delivering an amazing new facility that will be a world-class tourism attraction, and this funding will help make that a reality."
