- Africa Week runs from August 26 to September 1
- McGowan Government supports events with $39,000 via the Office of Multicultural Interests
Africa Week is an opportunity to celebrate the many ties between Australia and countries across Africa, including recognising the important contributions of Western Australian Africans.
Developed around the hugely successful Africa Down Under Conference, Africa Week now features a number of events and activities that explore the economic and cultural links between WA and African countries.
The State Government, via the Office of Multicultural Interests and in partnership with the Commonwealth Bank, is supporting key events during Africa Week including:
- WA African Awards, hosted by the Organisation of African Communities (OAC), recognising the achievements of Western Australian Africans across a number of sectors;
- Australia-Africa Trade, Investment and Cultural Expo at Yagan Square and hosted by the Advisory Group on Australian-African Relations (AGAAR), showcasing African Australian small businesses and cultural demonstrations; and
- Australia-Africa Week's Women in Leadership Forum, bringing together stakeholders, delegates and speakers from across Australia and Africa.
These join other events including the Africa Week Film Festival, the Australian-African Universities Network Forum and the Down Under Football Cup, to celebrate a continent of rich diversity and enormous potential beyond the mining sector.
There are currently more than 101,200 Africa-born people living in Western Australia, which makes up around 4.1 per cent of the total population.
