In a competition that seeks to inspire and raise awareness of organ and tissue donation, Western Australian high school students are being asked to 'step into the minds' of someone who is waiting and wishing for a second chance at life.

Launched to coincide with DonateLife Week 2018, the 'Writing for Life' competition, through creativity and passion will raise the level of conscious thinking about organ and tissue donation.

With $2,000 worth of prizes, generously donated by Donor Mate and Mr Geoff Spencer - in memory of his wife Ros who became an organ donor, entries will be read and judged by WA children's author and double lung recipient, Sandi Parsons and WA teens issues writer Nadia King.

Winners will be awarded in four categories; 12-13, 14-15, 16-18 year-olds and students who are studying English as a second language, with prizes being presented on National DonateLife Thankyou Day on November 18, 2018.

There are 1,400 Australians now listed on the organ transplant surgery waiting list, and a further 11,000 people on dialysis of which many would benefit from a kidney transplant.

The message for DonateLife Week this year is simple: Donate Strength, Donate Love, Donate Hope, Donate Life.

The gift of organ and tissue donation gives recipients a second chance at experiencing all of the love, joy and adventure that life has to offer. Thousands of Australians and their families are benefiting from the generosity of organ and tissue donors and their families.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

"Registering as an organ and tissue donor takes less than a minute, and could one day save the lives of many.

"DonateLife Week is Australia's national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation and is led by the Organ and Tissue Authority in partnership with DonateLife agencies in every State and Territory, and with participation of the broader organ and tissue donation and transplantation sector and other key stakeholders.

"This is the third year of the 'Writing for Life' competition, last year 185 Western Australian high school students entered making this a successful engagement awareness program."
