    • Two road realignments mark the end of the Grain Freight Road Improvement Program
    • More than 480 kilometres of Wheatbelt roads improved in the program

    The final two projects in the State Government's Grain Freight Road Improvement Program have been completed, with two road realignments in Quairading and Cubbine.

    The $118.3 million program launched in 2010 involved improvements and maintenance to more than 480 kilometres of State and local government roads throughout the Wheatbelt region.

    The upgrades spanned 15 local government areas from Nungarin in the north to Kulin in the east and Narrogin in the south. Works included:

    • Widening narrow seal to eight metres minimum width (a standard of seven metres minimum width on local roads);
    • The application of seals and reseals;Intersection upgrades; and
    • Geometry improvements/targeted realignments.

    The last project to be completed was a realignment at Cubbine and Wackett Curves by the Shire of Quairading.

    Both these realignments involved eliminating almost 90 degree curves, improving safety for vehicles, trucks and school buses.

    Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

    "The State Government continues to support improvements in agricultural freight transport.

    "In March this year the McGowan Government announced the development of a Revitalising Agricultural Region Freight Strategy, which will identify and prioritise specific infrastructure upgrades, technological solutions and policy measures to enhance road safety and freight transport productivity.

    "Stakeholders will be consulted throughout various stages of the process to ensure the entire supply chain is addressed."
