- Construction complete on state-of-the-art facility
- Major milestone reached for healthcare in the Pilbara
Construction of Karratha's new purpose-built health campus is now complete with the first patients expected in late October 2018.
Management of the site was handed over today from builders Multiplex to the State Government marking a major milestone for healthcare in the Pilbara.
With a 22-month build and more than 500,000 hours worked, the flagship facility has had a positive impact on local businesses and jobs with around 70 per cent of the workforce living in Karratha.
A significantly expanded emergency department is expected to treat around 18,500 patients each year with the campus also featuring a new surgical centre, maternity wing and delivery suites.
An expanded outpatients unit plus essential services such as child health clinics, new medical imaging suites and world-class telehealth services will all be delivered from one healthcare hub.
The new hospital also includes a helipad which will enable access for patients coming to Karratha from more remote locations, and support the emergency evacuation of patients needing urgent transport via Karratha airport to Perth.
Advanced preparation has gone into the transition phase as hundreds of dedicated staff relocate from Nickol Bay Hospital to the eagerly anticipated new facility over the coming months.
The Pilbara Industries Community Council donated $650,000 to support construction of the helipad. The five members of this group are BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Chevron Australia Pty Ltd, North West Shelf Venture, Rio Tinto Iron Ore and Woodside Petroleum.
