- Part of the $20 million McGowan Labor Government Better Bins recycling program
- The three-bin system can more than double kerbside waste diversion rates compared to the two-bin system
Two Western Australian local government authorities will share in $1.9 million of funding to improve recycling and kerbside waste collection services.
Environment Minister Stephen Dawson announced today the City of Joondalup and Town of Mosman Park have successfully applied for funding from the State Government's Better Bins program, to improve waste recovery from their kerbside collections.
The Better Bins program is key to supporting the State's recycling targets and helps local authorities improve their waste practices by funding initiatives that divert waste from landfill and promote recycling.
The Better Bins program promotes the use of a three-bin system, where residents separate their organic/green waste into a lime green lid bin, co-mingled recycling into a yellow lid bin, and general waste into a red lid bin.
The three-bin system can more than double kerbside waste diversion rates compared to the two-bin system. The colour-coded approach improves recycling by reducing contamination in the recycling streams. Cleaner recycling streams are easier to recycle and more valuable.
The City of Joondalup and Town of Mosman Park will expand their three-bin system coverage by 63,000 households in total.
Comments attributed to Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:
"The McGowan Government is committed to improving Western Australia's waste performance, by supporting households to reduce their waste and helping local governments increase their recycling.
"Since our election in March 2017, we have focused on improving recycling rates in Western Australia and reducing waste, with initiatives such as the ban on lightweight single-use plastic bags which will come into effect from July 1 and the introduction of a container deposit scheme.
"So far, local governments have been awarded over $9.3 million to provide Better Bins kerbside collection services to more than 309,500 households.
"There are significant gains to be made by improving the performance of kerbside recovery systems and I encourage local governments to apply for Better Bins program funding."
