    • State Government funds popular food and wine event until 2021
    • Annual event held over 10 days in the Great Southern region
    • Event attracts thousands of attendees, stimulating the local economy

Food and wine fans will continue to enjoy mouth-watering delights at Taste Great Southern after the popular culinary festival secured State Government funding for the next three years.

The annual event comprises activities that celebrate the lifestyle, premium food and award-winning wine of Western Australia's Great Southern region.

The aim of the festival is to profile and add vibrancy to the Great Southern region by offering a diverse program of events that showcase local produce, places, talent and culture to visitors from outside of the region.

Past events have attracted up to 10,000 attendees, with about 1,500 visitors from outside the Great Southern region each year, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars for the local economy.

Taste Great Southern will deliver about 25 unique food and wine events over 10 days, from the end of March to early April each year, providing opportunities for local businesses as well as casual employment in the lead-up to, and during, the event.

Local artists and musicians are included in a number of events across the festival, including performances on streetscapes, and at local produce markets, restaurants and wineries.

The event owner, Great Southern Tourism Events, will put out a tender for a professional event management company to manage the event over the three-year contract.

Comments attributed to Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:

"Over the past 14 years, Taste Great Southern has grown into one of the State's top food and wine festivals, and the State Government's sponsorship until 2021 will see the event flourish further.

"Taste Great Southern is an incredible showcase of the region's world-class cuisine with thousands of attendees each year enjoying festivals, degustation dinners, beach barbecues, markets, classes, performances and celebrity chefs.

"Tourism is a key pillar of the State Government's plan to diversify the economy, create jobs and develop business opportunities.

"We have a Two-Year Action Plan in place to help us attract more visitors to Western Australia, encourage them to stay longer, disperse further and do more while they are here."

Comments attributed to Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"Taste Great Southern shows off the best this region has to offer: exquisite local food and drinks, a stunning natural environment and a region fast becoming a cultural centre in WA.

"The event is a real boon to local producers and businesses, while helping to build the region's reputation as a place to go to.

"Tourism is critical for regional development and well established events like Taste Great Southern are a great asset for our State."
