    • Refurbishments at Bruce Rock and Narembeen memorial health services complete
    • Part of the biggest capital works program ever completed by the WA Country Health Service

Representing the Minister for Health, Agricultural Region MLC Laurie Graham has today opened the Bruce Rock and Narembeen memorial health services which have undergone redevelopments.

The redevelopments are part of a $300 million capital works program that is improving infrastructure in 37 towns across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Mid-West and South-West regions. In the Wheatbelt, the program includes the redevelopment of Merredin, Narrogin and Northam hospitals, as well as upgrades to 23 small hospitals and health centres.

Upgrades to Bruce Rock Memorial Health Service include a new ambulance entry, a new main entry with accessible ramp, a new triage room adjacent to the waiting area and two refurbished multipurpose consult rooms.

The inpatient ward also received a new ensuite, upgraded shower and toilet, the kitchen was refurbished and a new courtyard was attached to the palliative care area. The health service was rewired and a new nurse call and duress alarm system installed. A new emergency generator was also installed.

Upgrades to Narembeen Memorial Health Service include an improved multipurpose consult room, an upgraded main entrance and waiting area, a refurbished kitchen and an enclosed walkway to connect the health service to Koolberrin Aged Care Lodge.

The hospital switchboards and distribution boards were also upgraded, and a new generator was installed that can fully support the health service's operations during power outages.

Complementing improvements to hospital infrastructure, the Bruce Rock and Narembeen health services have also benefited from investment in digital and information systems, including the introduction of a full coverage, voice grade wireless network that will support the planned integration of new nurse call and mobile duress systems.

Staff will now be able to use mobile technology as Wi-Fi will be available throughout the hospitals. The wireless networks will also support the future use of wireless telehealth carts that will be able to bring videoconferencing to the patient's bedside.

Capital upgrades, along with an investment in digital and information systems and telehealth services combine to make contemporary health services more accessible to people living in regional areas.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

"Upgrades to ICT systems at Bruce Rock and Narembeen health services futureproof the facilities.

"The upgrades will allow these communities to keep up with technological advances as we move towards new systems.

"In country areas, where there is limited ICT support, it is crucial to invest in these upgrades, ensuring the systems are more reliable and resilient."

Comment attributed to Agricultural Region MLC Laurie Graham:

"Local health services are so important to regional communities and it is important that we continue to invest and upgrade them, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for care."
