Applications are now open for the McGowan Government's Thank a Volunteer Day Celebration Grants program, which supports communities to celebrate volunteers in their local area.

Up to $1,000 is available for organisations to deliver a range of events and activities that celebrate the contributions of volunteers in Western Australian communities.

The grants will support local events and activities including award ceremonies, workshops, afternoon teas, excursions and barbecues.

Metropolitan areas will host events on International Volunteer Day on December 5, 2018. Regional areas can host events from International Volunteer Day or any day in the three months following.

To apply for a grant, visit http://www.dlgc.wa.gov.au/commgrants.  Applications close on June 21, 2018.

Comments attributed to Volunteering Minister Mick Murray:

"Volunteers are the backbone of our communities and the value of their work, commitment and passion cannot be underestimated.

"These grants provide local governments and community organisations with the opportunity to recognise community volunteers locally - a small investment for the thousands of hours these people put into their communities each year.

"I encourage all relevant organisations to apply for these grants and find meaningful ways to acknowledge the special contribution that all volunteers make."
