    • WA's five Winter Olympic and Paralympic athletes receive a standing ovation from Members of Parliament

Western Australia's PyeongChang 2018 competitors received a standing ovation from Members of Parliament last Wednesday (April 11), as Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray commended them for a strong showing at the Winter Games.

Olympic bobsledders Lucas Mata (Scarborough) and David Mari (Perth) joined Paralympic snowboarder Sean Pollard (Bunbury) and alpine skier Shaun Pianta (Collie) at Parliament House to watch Mr Murray's address.

Cross-country skier Jessica Yeaton (Perth) rounded out the Games' Western Australian contingent.

The Minister acknowledged the WA athletes for their years of hard work, dedication and commitment towards representing Australia at the highest level.

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

"These five athletes personify the qualities all sportspeople should aspire to.

"At a time when integrity in sport is being questioned, they represent everything positive about playing to win - but not forgetting good sportsmanship.

"Sean Pollard is a para-snowboarder who became a double-limb amputee after a shark attack while surfing. He was determined to keep an active lifestyle and is already a Paralympic athlete after only beginning in the sport in 2015.

"Shaun Pianta is one of the best alpine para-skiers in the world. Despite a couple of broken legs along the way, Shaun finished 14th in the giant slalom. It shows they are made pretty tough in Collie.

"Lucas Mata is a former State-level sprinter who has made his name competing in the bobsleigh event.

"David Mari, who formed a dynamic duo with Lucas Mata, started as a gymnast, was then a basketballer, and then a sprinter, before he met Mata and began his journey to the Olympics.

"Jessica Yeaton is a Perth-raised cross-country skier who made it to the ladies' team sprint semi-final, finishing sixth."
