Western Australia's biggest celebration of seniors gets underway today, with a week of activities to excite and inform older Western Australians - and active ageing is top of the agenda.

More than $79,000 has been provided to 86 organisations through the State Government's Seniors Week Community Grants program, for events throughout the State.

Among the events are two free screenings in Augusta and Margaret River of films from the recent Life in Pictures short film competition. The competition was a creative collaboration between the Department of Communities, Revelation Perth International Film Festival and Screenwest to challenge negative attitudes and stereotypes about ageing.

In Yokine, JewishCare WA is hosting a music concert, while in Pinjarra the Shire of Murray is hosting a country and western themed evening for seniors.

A highlight of Seniors Week is the annual Have a Go Day at Burswood Park on Wednesday, November 1, with about 15,000 people expected to attend.

Have a Go Day - celebrating its 25th year at Burswood Park - is an opportunity for seniors to try a range of activities and source seniors-specific services and information, while challenging some of the negative stereotypes about ageing.

The Seniors Week Community Grants program is administered by the Council on the Ageing WA with support from the State Government and Lotterywest.  Organisations applied for funding of up to $3,000 for events and activities during Seniors Week.
