Healthway and Little Athletics promote healthy era for WA kids

    16/09/2017 10:00 AM
    • $160,000 over two years to encourage young Western Australian athletes to eat healthy and Go for 2&5
    • Go for 2&5 encourages everyone to eat more fruit and vegetables

A new partnership between Healthway and Little Athletics WA will promote the Go for 2&5 healthy eating message to thousands of young athletes aged between six and 17 and their families.

The partnership will also support increased availability of healthy food and drink choices at Little Athletics WA events across 85 clubs, 8,700 participants and 35 event centres across the State.

Go for 2&5 promotes eating two serves of fruit and five of vegetables each day as a guide for good health.

As part of the sponsorship, the Little Athletics WA community will be provided with information about healthy eating that they can use and circulate throughout their clubs.

Young athletes and their families will be encouraged to contribute to a healthy snack recipe book and a healthy pre-competition meal recipe book which will be distributed State-wide.

Nearly all (99 per cent) of Healthway-sponsored organisations now have healthy food choices available at their events as part of sponsorship arrangements.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

"This is a great partnership that will help our youngest generation grow into healthy adults and create a new, healthy era in Western Australian junior sport.

"This is vitally important when only 39.7 per cent of children aged five to 15 years are sufficiently active for good health, and only around one in six (15.7 per cent) of children aged between two and 15 years are eating the recommended serves of vegies each day."

Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

"It is terrific that Little Athletics will be supported by an organisation with such a positive message to pass onto our young sportspeople.

"Little Athletics provides a great pathway for WA's youngsters into more senior levels of sport - indeed many of WA's athletics champions started out running, jumping and throwing at Little Athletics clubs on community ovals and tracks around the State."
