    • Roundtable with young women kicks off a series of discussions to be conducted with women across the State

    A group of young Western Australian women have today painted a powerful picture for the McGowan Government about leadership, change and disrupting the 'status quo' when it comes to gender equality.

    The group, aged between 19 and 24 years old, met with Women's Interests Minister Simone McGurk at a roundtable discussion in Parliament House this morning to look at ways to better address gender equality in the State.

    Among the representatives that attended were young Aboriginal women, women from regional WA, women living at Foyer Oxford and National Youth Week Ambassadors Darci Miller (2017 winner) and Georgie Carey (2016 winner).

    The participants spoke about opportunities in the areas of:

    • Public health;
    • Violence against young women, including domestic violence;
    • Rights of young people in care;
    • People with disability;
    • Social entrepreneurship; and
    • Rights of the LGBT community.

    The roundtable is the first of many to be held across WA this year.

    Comments attributed to Women's Interests Minister Simone McGurk:

    "Despite a gender pay gap, as well as persistent inequity across our society, there is a real desire by young women to take up leadership positions and roles that see them influencing positive change in their communities.

    We will be engaging with women from all walks of life to hear what challenges they are facing, where the opportunities might lie - and how we, as a government and a community, can help Western Australian girls and women reach their full potential."
