- Youth clear winners with $40,000 for leadership and mentoring program in Geraldton
- Funding part of close to $1 million in local project in Geraldton area
Youth Minister Peter Tinley announced a $40,000 grant to deliver a leadership and mentoring program in Geraldton today, part of a wider suite worth $980,000 for the Geraldton area.
The announcement is the fulfilment of a promise made by WA Labor under the leadership of now Premier Mark McGowan in the lead-up to the State election in March this year.
The $40,000 funding, part of the Local Projects, Local Jobs initiative in Western Australia's Mid-West region, will be used to develop a sustainable mentoring and leadership program that partners the Mid-West Chamber of Commerce and Industry with Ngala Midwest Gascoyne.
Ngala Midwest Gascoyne was formed following the merger in August 2016 of the not-for-profit Geraldton Regional Community Education Centre (CRCEC) with Ngala, an early parenting and early childhood services provider.
Ngala Midwest Gascoyne delivers services in education and care, training and employment, individual and family support, counselling, partnership development and services co-ordination.
Contracts were recently signed between Ngala Midwest Gascoyne and the Mid-West Development Commission and work has already begun to get the program up and running.
Comments attributed to Youth Minister Peter Tinley:
"It is gratifying to support the next generation of leaders in the Geraldton community.
"This funding demonstrates how seriously the McGowan Government takes its election promises and shows how we value our regional youth and regional communities.
"It is crucial we foster development of the nearly half a million young people aged between 12 and 25 in this State and help properly prepare them to meet the challenges of the future."
Comments attributed to Agricultural Region MLC Laurie Graham:
"GRCEC and now Ngala Midwest Gascoyne is highly regarded in the community and has won awards for the services it has operated in the past. I am pleased to be part of this funding commitment made by the McGowan Government that will give many of our youth the skills and abilities to become future leaders."
