    • The Senate has passed the Native Title Amendment (Indigenous Land Use Agreements) Bill 2017
    • Passage of this legislation will enable the McGowan Government to progress with the South West Native Title Settlement

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt has welcomed the passage of the Native Title Amendment (Indigenous Land Use Agreements) Bill 2017, which passed through the Senate today.

The passage of this legislation will provide for the validation of the four ILUAs (Indigenous Land Use Agreements) that are subject of the McGlade decision, and enable the State Government to progress with the South West Native Title Settlement.

While the legal matters raised in the McGlade decision have resulted in delays to the commencement of the ILUAs, the State Government and the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council remain committed to the South West Native Title Settlement, which remains the most comprehensive native title agreement proposed in Australian history.

Comments attributed to Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt:

"The passing of this Bill has restored certainty to the ILUA process across Western Australia. Requiring unanimity is an unreasonable imposition on Aboriginal people striving to ensure that their native title rights can be used to develop economic opportunities.

"The State Government looks forward to working with the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council to finalise the South West Native Title Settlement as soon as possible."
