Western Australia's sport and recreation volunteers have been thanked for their tireless service at the annual recognition breakfast in celebration of National Volunteer Week.

The breakfast is WA's yearly chance to make sure the State's volunteers are appreciated for the time and expertise they give to the community.

Volunteering and Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray thanked the 140 volunteers who attended the breakfast at The University of Western Australia's University Club this morning (May 8), acknowledging their important work assisting community sport and recreation.

The breakfast recognises the thousands of volunteers across WA who help sport run and grow in different ways - from cutting oranges to managing fixtures and coaching.

National Volunteer Week runs from Monday, May 8 May to Sunday, May 14. Those interested in volunteering in sport and recreation in their community, should visit http://www.volunteeringwa.org.au

Comments attributed to Volunteering and Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

"Volunteers are one of sport and recreation's most valuable assets.  Without them, community sport just wouldn't happen.

"Having been brought up in regional WA where sport plays a huge part in community life, I was fortunate to have been mentored and coached by some wonderful people who not only gave me the opportunity to play and enjoy sport, but handed down some sound life skills and values as well.

"There's something special about being involved in a club, no matter what your age.  Young people can find great role models and learn all about leadership and sportsmanship while older people can stay connected to the community and a sport or activity they have always loved."
