Veterans of the Boer War, including Western Australia's contingent, were honoured today at a special unveiling of a memorial at Anzac Parade in Canberra.

Veterans Issues Minister Peter Tinley, and other dignitaries from across the country, watched on as the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) dedicated the memorial as part of this year's Boer War Day commemorations.

The memorial honours the 23,000 Australian soldiers and nurses who served in the Boer War in South Africa between 1899 and 1902.

Nearly 1,000 Australians paid the ultimate sacrifice during the war that began while Australia still consisted of separate colonies and ended after Federation.

Mr Tinley said the unveiling of the memorial was a moving ceremony that provided ample opportunity to reflect on the selflessness of our ancestors in the first war that Australia fought as a nation.

Comments attributed to Veterans Issues Minister Peter Tinley:

"Many Western Australians paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Boer War.

"This war, which was fought by both Australians and New Zealanders, is an important part of our history and laid the foundations for the Anzac spirit.

"It is fitting and appropriate that this memorial takes its place on Anzac Parade as we commemorate their spirit and sacrifice."
