    • McGowan Government allocates funds to allow the Cadets WA program to continue
    • Previous government failed to provide funding for the program to operate into the future
    • Cadets WA helps young people to develop life skills, leadership and community responsibility

The McGowan Government has stepped in to fill another Budget shortfall left behind by the previous Liberal National Government.

The Cadets WA program started as a trial in 11 schools in 1996 and has now expanded to nearly 200 cadet units operating throughout the State from Wyndham to Esperance.

Currently there are 9,440 cadets, with 20 per cent of participants being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and 12 per cent having disability.

However, like so many other areas of the Budget, the previous government failed to provide more than $700,000 required to fully operate the program going forward.

Without further funding, the opportunities for young people to access development programs such as Cadets WA will be significantly reduced.

The McGowan Labor Government has made the decision to allocate funding to meet the shortfall within the departmental budget.

The Cadets WA Reference Group will also consider how the funding model for the program can be improved.

Comments attributed to Youth Minister Peter Tinley:

"This funding will provide Cadets WA with financial certainty so they can continue to provide this vital program to young Western Australians.

"The Cadets WA program has a proven record of achieving results.  It continues to increase in popularity and provides an extra avenue for development for our youth.

"It provides opportunities to develop practical life skills, leadership, teamwork, initiative and qualities of community responsibility and service.

"While I'm disappointed ongoing funding was not provided by the previous government, I'm pleased we've been able to secure funding to allow it to continue.

"This is just another example of the McGowan Labor Government stepping in to fix the mess left behind by Mike Nahan and the previous Liberal National Government."
