- Temporary exemption for day labour for local governments affected by January and February flooding
The McGowan Government has announced a temporary exemption for day labour for all Western Australian local governments affected by the floods in January and February this year.
The temporary exemption will allow local governments to use their own workforce and equipment to assist in repairing flood-damaged critical infrastructure and still be reimbursed under the Western Australia Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (WANDRRA).
This is a temporary exemption and only applicable for declared emergency events.
The exemption is temporary primarily because new and more streamlined processes are being developed with the Commonwealth, which will commence in mid-2018.

Comments attributed to Emergency Services Minister Fran Logan:
"This temporary exemption is great news for local governments facing a large recovery effort following the flooding events earlier this year.
"These local governments can now use their own labour, plant and equipment provided it is a more cost effective option for them.
"I recognise this has been a lengthy and frustrating process for those communities impacted by the flooding.
"While this has taken some time to work through with the Commonwealth Government, I am hopeful this new process will provide choice for our local governments in how they repair roads and other essential public assets, as well as being more cost effective for taxpayers."
