It was to be expected that Liberal Party silvertails would not know there was a free Legal Aid telephone service for people living in remote and country areas, Justice Minister David Smith said today.
Mr Smith was referring to a Liberal Party pledge in its Law and Order Policy document to set up such a service if elected to Government.
"A free 008 telephone service already exists for country callers to ensure they have access to legal advice and assistance," Mr Smith said.
"Lawyers and paralegals are available to callers who dial 008 809 616 from remote and country areas throughout Western Australia.
"A heavy emphasis is placed on training for the people who staff this service to ensure that problems posed by WA's vast distances in matters of the law are countered.
"Currently, this service is handling about 30 calls per week."
