Claim about proposed earth science museum wrong

The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies was wrong to claim that the Government had failed to support its proposal for an earth science museum, Arts Minister Kay Hallahan said today.

Mrs Hallahan said the establishment of an earthmuseum was included in the Premier's Northbridge Square policy statement released at the weekend.

"The Government is committed to establishing an earthmuseum in Northbridge as part of massive redevelopment plans for the area," she said.

Mrs Hallahan said an earthmuseum was one of several proposals considered for the historic Swan Barracks, but the Government had decided that the venue best suited an Aboriginal cultural heritage centre.

The Minister said the Government had also decided that purpose-built facilities for the earthmuseum would be preferable.
