State Cabinet needed more time to consider Asea Brown Boveri's Collie power station proposal, Fuel and Energy Minister Geoff Gallop said today.

Dr Gallop said Cabinet had deferred a decision on the extension of ABB's sole-bidder mandate for the project to allow more detailed examination of the proposal.

"The $2 billion Collie project will have a significant impact on the State's economy and the Government needs to be clear that State objectives will be met," Dr Gallop said.

"The Government is encouraged by ABB's commitment to the project and the significant progress that has been made on the power-purchase agreement and related issues.

"However, Cabinet has a responsibility to ensure that the project is in the interests of all Western Australians."
