State Cabinet will consider a recommendation from SECWA on whether to continue Asea Brown Boveri's sole-bidder mandate to build the State's next base-load power station.

Fuel and Energy Minister Geoff Gallop said today that SECWA had advised him that the board planned to meet tomorrow to consider the response by the project proponents, ABB, to SECWA's notice of intention to terminate their sole bidder status.

Dr Gallop said he anticipated that the board would make a recommendation to Cabinet on ABB's sole bidder status.

"SECWA is now in the process of examining ABB's response.  The board will then consider the proposal," he said.

"It is important to emphasise that the detail of SECWA's talks is a matter for SECWA, and ABB and its financiers.

"The negotiations have not directly involved the Government.  Cabinet's decision will be based on whether it is satisfied that the project would deliver the best deal for the State.

"It remains for the private sector to deliver on this key point."
