Premier Carmen Lawrence said today the new Buy WA campaign offered Western Australians a unique chance to use `people power' to create jobs.
"All of us can help one another by buying WA-made products which will lead to more sales and jobs," the Premier said.
"The household shopping list can be turned into a powerful instrument for local economic recovery."
Dr Lawrence was speaking at the launch of the Buy WA campaign at the Woolworths supermarket in Morley.
The Premier said the campaign was aimed at encouraging the purchase of locally-made products and services where price and standard was comparable.
"The State Government has provided $100,000 and business has pledged hundreds of thousands of dollars to the campaign.
"The combined purchasing power of Western Australians will provide a solid and viable base for business to expand and employ more people.
"If every WA company could grow sufficiently to employ one additional person, our unemployment rate would be halved.
"The potential for economic growth through our support of locally-made goods and service is enormous.
"The local business sector is the backbone of the WA economy and all of us can help assure its prosperous future."
