Community groups and families of Western Australians with disabilities have been urged to take advantage of Government grants worth more than $3.5 million, which are now available.

Community Development and Family Minister Eric Ripper said today the grants were available through the 'Grow Together' and 'Social Advantage' packages.

'Grow Together' was launched last Wednesday by Premier Carmen Lawrence and Mr Ripper, and was a broad public information campaign to encourage better communication between parents and children.

One-off grants of up to $5,000 were available to assist community groups to initiate projects specifically tailored for local needs.  The grants were available for non-profit, community-based organisations, special interest groups or local government.

"This is in line with the Government's committed philosophy to work in partnership with non-Government and community organisations, to provide the most suitable assistance," Mr Ripper said.

"The grants are being offered particularly to organisations involved with children, or interested in developing and running parenting courses."

Examples of other suitable projects ranged from self-esteem projects and raising awareness on children's rights, to recreational activities and research into particular needs.

Mr Ripper said the 'Social Advantage' also offered grants worth a total of $250,000 to help those who cared for people with disabilities to pay for support services.

"Up to $2,000 will be made available to families each year, to help in the provision of services such as home help and respite care, the cost of which can be a major burden on the family," he said.

The Minister said the 'Grow Together' and 'Social Advantage' grants brought together and expanded those previously funded by the Offices of the Family, Women's Interests, Seniors, and Multicultural Interests.
