Attorney General and Corrective Services Minister Joe Berinson said he had been advised that the Director of Public Prosecutions had filed an appeal yesterday against a sentence imposed on Paul Stephen Keating last month.
Keating was sentenced to five years' imprisonment on eight charges relating to the aggravated sexual assault of a prison officer. The maximum penalty available was 20 years.
At the time of sentencing, Mr Berinson described the offence as one of the worst kind and asked the DPP to review the case.
He said today that the appeal court would now determine whether the sentence was appropriate.
