Water Resources Minister Ernie Bridge has asked the Water Authority to evaluate proposals for a new pipeline to be built to augment water supplies in Wyndham.

Mr Bridge said he had asked the Water Authority to consider proceeding with the project under the Rural Water Strategy, and to provide its advice as a matter of urgency.

"It is clear that existing water restrictions in Wyndham are causing significant difficulties for the town," the Minister said.

"The Wyndham development committee has stressed that unless a secure water supply to Wyndham is assured, progress and development in Wyndham will be slow, inhibiting opportunities such as horticulture, mineral processing, increased fishing, and the long-term viability of the crocodile farm."

Mr Bridge said he had recently taken the opportunity to fly along one suggested pipeline route.

"The location known as Manby Scrub, slightly west of the `bend in the Ord' on Carlton Hill Station, appears to be an excellent location for the offtake pipe, but alternative routes would also need to be considered," he said.

"I also understand there may be spare pumps available in Kununurra which could be put to good use."

Mr Bridge said the Rural Water Strategy provided flexibility for the Water Authority to proceed with a project such as the Wyndham pipeline if the local community was prepared to contribute to the total cost.
