Corrective Services Minister Joe Berinson said today that he had asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to review the case of Paul Stephen Keating, who yesterday was sentenced to five years' imprisonment on eight charges relating to the aggravated sexual assault of a prison officer.
"Keating's assaults were of the worst kind," Mr Berinson said.
"They were made even more serious by the fact that they were committed by a sentenced prisoner against a female prison officer who was on duty at the time."
Mr Berinson said that it was hard to imagine a worse example of this offence, the maximum penalty for which was 20 years.
He had asked the DPP to consider Keating's most recent sentence, with a view to the possibility of an appeal against it.
