The Liberals' Goods and Services Tax had been shown up for what it really was - a Goodbye Successful Tourism tax, Tourism Minister Pam Beggs said today.
"Analysis of the GST by the Liberals' own accounting adviser clearly has shown the 15 per cent charge amounts to little more than a hidden bed tax," she said.
"As well, the GST would increase the costs of a range of goods that currently were not subject to tax, especially basic food items used in hotels and restaurants as well as the home."
Mrs Beggs said it was indefensible for the Liberals to continue to promote the impact of the GST as being a one-off 4.7 per cent rise in inflation.
"It is clear from the analysis revealed this morning that the GST would add up to 13 per cent to accommodation costs and a further 10 to 14 per cent on meal costs," she said.
"Tourism has been identified as perhaps the single most important sector in which to generate jobs, especially for young people.
"A GST as proposed by the Liberals would stifle this employment growth as well as leading to a downturn in the existing level of activity within the hospitality and tourism industry."
