Federal and State Attorneys General from throughout Australia will meet in Perth tomorrow (Thursday, July 2) to discuss issues including the possibility of a uniform criminal code for Australia.
Attorney General Joe Berinson said it was widely believed that the current diversity across the States in criminal law and even such principles as age of criminal responsibility was unsatisfactory, and that a uniform criminal code for all States and Territories should be pursued.
Some of the other issues to be discussed include censorship laws, uniform defamation laws, the cost of justice and access to the law, portability across States of restraining orders, and international transfer of prisoners.
The Standing Committee of Attorneys General meets three times a year, but this is the first time Perth has hosted a meeting since 1987.
