Legislation to ensure Crown retains Royal Commission documents

The Government has agreed to legislate to ensure the Crown can retain possession of Royal Commission documents after the Commission has concluded its report, Attorney General Joe Berinson said today.

"The Government has been working with the Director of Public Prosecutions, John McKechnie, since March to ensure this occurs," Mr Berinson said.

"Mr McKechnie will ensure the legislation meets his requirements."

Mr Berinson was commenting on action by the Liberal Party to introduce its own legislation for the retention of Royal Commission documents.

He said the Liberal move was an unnecessary duplication of action by the Government and should be discontinued.

"The Government has accepted Mr McKechnie's advice that documents held by the Royal Commission may be important for further investigations or prosecutions and should remain available to the Crown," he said.

"It is clearly appropriate that the DPP be involved in drafting this legislation, and that process should not be interfered with by the Opposition."
