The development of a draft management plan for Lane Poole Reserve between Dwellingup and Collie gets under way next month with a series of public workshops run by the Department of Conservation and Land Management.

Information gathered from the workshops will be used to develop a draft 10-year management plan to protect the key values of the reserve.

Environment Minister Judy Edwards said the plan would focus on biodiversity conservation, the continued improvement of recreation facilities and services and strategic fire management.

“This document will form the framework for the protection of the reserve’s conservation, recreational, cultural, economic, educational and research values,” Dr Edwards said.

“Lane Poole Reserve has long been a favourite recreation destination for locals but it is also extremely popular with residents from the Perth metropolitan area.

“It is ideally placed because it is only one-and-a-half hours’ drive from Perth and is readily accessible to nearby communities such as Bunbury, Mandurah and Pinjarra.

“The Murray River flows permanently through the northern part of the reserve and is the hub for a diverse range of recreation opportunities such as camping, fishing, marroning, bush walking, swimming, canoeing, rafting, mountain biking, sightseeing and four-wheel driving.”

The draft plan is expected to be released for public comment towards the middle of 2006 and submissions to the draft plan will be considered in the preparation of the final plan to be approved by Dr Edwards.

Public workshops to help develop the plan follow on from the restructuring of the advisory committee and the release of an issues paper by CALM in 2004. Comments on the issues paper can be made at http://www.naturebase.net/haveyoursay/index.html
