Highly respected planning and transport consultant Stuart Hicks has been appointed chairman of the East Perth Redevelopment Authority .
Mr Hicks replaces Dr Ken Michael, who will become Western Australia’s new Governor next month.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said Mr Hicks brought significant planning and government experience to the role and was well positioned to help EPRA deliver projects which would change the face of the city during the next few years.
“For more than 20 years, Mr Hicks has been a respected senior executive within the public service,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“In Government, he served as inaugural chairman and CEO of Transperth; chairman of the Coastal Shipping Commission; executive director of Marine and Harbours; WA Planning Commissioner; and director-general of the Department of Transport.
“Since retiring in 1996, Mr Hicks has served as chairman of the National Transport Commission; the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy; the State Government’s Machinery of Government Taskforce; and the Planning and Transport Research Centre.”
Ms MacTiernan said Mr Hicks was well-acquainted with many of EPRA’s flagship projects, including the massive Northbridge Link Project.
“As chairman of the Northbridge Link Committee, Mr Hicks worked with the City of Perth and government agencies to develop a framework for the sinking of the Fremantle rail line and the opening up of massive development opportunities between the CBD and Northbridge,” the Minister said.
“His impeccable credentials and commitment to helping deliver visionary projects will greatly benefit EPRA.”
Ms MacTiernan also paid tribute to Dr Michael - EPRA’s outgoing chairman.
“Dr Michael was a founding board member of EPRA and subsequently appointed Chairman in 2001,” the Minister said.
“During this time, Dr Michael’s extensive government and engineering background allowed him to make a significant contribution to many EPRA projects.
“In the boardroom, his inclusive and considered leadership style has also been an enormous asset to the Authority.
“Dr Michael now, of course, goes on to serve the people of WA as Governor - a job I know he will discharge with great dignity and humanity.”
