Local company Mid-West Training Group has been awarded a contract to build new family accommodation in Geraldton.

Housing and Works Minister Francis Logan said the $368,312 project would see the construction of two three-bedroom duplex units at Lot 1341 in Fraser Street.

Mr Logan, who will be in Geraldton on Saturday, said the units would be designed by Geraldton-based Eastman Poletti Sherwood Architects and built from masonry-veneer.

The Minister said the Mid-West Training Group had an enviable record of providing Aboriginal apprentices with on-the-job training.

“Since 1996, Homeswest and the Mid-West Training Group have combined to deliver 29 new dwellings in Geraldton,” he said.

“It is a very successful agreement that underpins the State Government’s commitment to providing Aboriginal youth with the skills necessary for a career as successful tradesmen.”

Last month, Mr Logan announced that the Mid-West Training Group had won the $782,239 contract to build three new homes in Mullewa - the company’s first project outside Geraldton.

The Minister said the Department of Housing and Works had been very impressed with the quality and efficiency of the work undertaken by the Mid-West Training Group.

The units are being built as part of Homeswest’s State-wide stock replacement program, which aims to replace 200 dwellings per year.

“They are also a further demonstration of the Gallop Government’s commitment to providing suitable family accommodation in Geraldton,” Mr Logan said.

“The units have a five-star energy rating and will reduce heating and cooling costs. They will be oriented so that east and west elevations are well shaded, whereas northern elevations should receive as much winter sun as possible.”

The new homes are due to be completed in July 2006.
