    WA Clipper wins again

    16/11/2005 12:00 AM

The locally sponsored Clipper yacht continues to leave the competition in its wake in the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race.

Tourism Minister Mark McGowan said skipper Dave Pryce and his crew crossed the finish line off Durban in first place at about 10am today, after holding a commanding lead for much of the race from Salvador.

“Once again the Western Australians are ahead of the game, crossing the finish line well ahead of their nearest rival New York Clipper,” Mr McGowan said.

“The crew are now approaching the Clipper Race Village at Yacht Mole, where a spectacular Zulu warrior welcome awaits.

”This win puts in a very encouraging position for the third leg of the voyage.

"Following the 12-day stop in Durban, the Clipper fleet will take on the Southern Ocean on its way to Fremantle - the only Australian host port.

"Fremantle is set to come alive with Clipper fever and we cannot wait to see them come over the horizon about December 17.”

Thousands of yachting fans, as well as family and friends of the 10 crews, are expected to inject about $2million into the local economy.

Mr McGowan said the had been sponsored by the Gallop Government to showcase the State to the world.

“Tourism WA’s new website - - is receiving major attention around the world due to our involvement in this race,” he said.

“This means our tourism industry will benefit and more jobs and opportunities will flow on to Western Australians.”

The Clipper Village will be located at Fishing Boat Harbour in the heart of Fremantle. Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet the crew and see the yachts close up as they prepare for their next leg - north to China - via Singapore.

"Once again, I would like to congratulate the crew and I look forward to being part of a great WA welcome at Fishing Boat Harbour in Fremantle on December 17,” Mr McGowan said.
