The Western Australian Liberal Party would turn WA into a nuclear dump, Environment Minister Judy Edwards said today.

“Liberal leader Matt Birney must now come out and say if he favours Mt Walton, west of his own electorate of Kalgoorlie, becoming the nation’s nuclear dumping ground,” Dr Edwards said.

“Mr Birney also has to say if he will move to repeal legislation passed by State Parliament in March last year which bans radioactive waste dumps being established in WA.”

The Minister said Parliament passed the Nuclear Waste (Storage) Prohibition Act to ban the transport and storage in WA of nuclear waste generated in other States and Territories.

“However, the Liberal Party conference now wants the Parliamentary Liberal Party to consider using the facility at Mt Walton,” she said.

“Mr Birney can no longer sit on the fence.

“He must drop the charade and explain to the public of WA what his position is in respect to radioactive waste being stored in this State.”

Dr Edwards said the Gallop Government had been re-elected on a firm platform of no uranium mining and no nuclear waste dumps in WA.
