    7/10/2005 12:00 AM

Tourism Minister, Mark McGowan today welcomed more than 5,000 senior officers and crew aboard USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) to Western Australia.

The USS NIMITZ is the lead ship of America’s newest and largest class of aircraft carriers.

Mr McGowan said the visit by the Americans would boost the local economy and help create jobs and opportunities for Western Australians.

“Fremantle continues to be a popular port of call for the US navy,” he said.

“We are pleased to join the list of ports USS NIMITZ has visited since its deployment and I trust officers and crew will enjoy their rest and relaxation in our State."

Mr McGowan said an estimated 577,000 US navy personnel had visited WA since May 1975.

“These statistics reinforce the fact that Fremantle - and WA - are very popular destinations for the US Navy,” he said.

“While the US Navy will continue to make decisions on where to send its fleet based on operational matters, it is great to see them back in Fremantle, contributing to our local economy.

“Australia and the United States are closely bound by economic and security arrangements.

“The US Navy plays a pivotal role in regional stability, and we look forward to the continuation of its strong association with WA.”
