As part of Main Roads’ annual bridge maintenance program for the road network, a contract has been awarded for bridgeworks on three timber bridges in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt South Region.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today announced that BGC Contracting Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract for bridgeworks on the timber bridges at a cost of $700,000.

Work on the bridges is scheduled to commence in mid November 2005 with the completion expected prior to June 2006, and will be managed by Main Roads Western Australia, Wheatbelt South Region.

The first bridge is located on Northam-Cranbrook Road, south of Brookton, the second on Katanning-Dumbleyung Road and the third on Dangin Mears Road, west of Quairading.

“The works will involve construction of concrete overlays and approach slabs, installation of guardrails, substructure repairs and routine maintenance works,” Ms MacTiernan said.

“The work will improve road safety and load carrying capacity on these roads.

“Other benefits to be considered include the reduction in maintenance costs and improvements of traffic flows and riding comfort.”
