The State Government has allocated $50,000 to help South-West organisations host events in the region, South-West Minister Mark McGowan announced today.

Mr McGowan said the funding was in addition to events funding available from Tourism WA.

“This scheme is specific to the South-West, providing grants of up to $5,000 for festivals, events and markets that attract visitors to the region,” he said.

“Grants range from about $500 for smaller events such as the Dunsborough Arts Festival to $5,000 for larger events like the highly-successful Margaret River Wine Tourism conference.

“I urge all events organisers to apply for this funding before October 21, no matter how big or small the event.

“Events make a significant contribution to the region’s economy, creating jobs and opportunities for locals.”

Mr McGowan said Pemberton’s Marron and Wine Festival, the CapelFest, and the South West Opera Company’s presentation of Les Miserables were among the 30 organisations to receive grants last year.

Previously, Manjimup’s Cherry Harmony Festival and the Bunbury Agricultural Society received the funding, which is administered through the South West Development Commission.

To be eligible, events must be of regional significance and provide an experience of high quality. The event must also be held in 2006.

“The quality of the applicants is testament to the fact that the South-West hosts an array of vibrant and exciting events each year,” Mr McGowan said.

Applications for the grants are available at or by telephoning the SWDC on 9792 2000.
