Putting WA on the itinerary for North East Asia
24/09/2005 12:00 AM
Tourism Minister Mark McGowan will lead a high-ranking tourism delegation to Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Japan this week to lift the profile of Western Australia in North East Asia.
Mr McGowan said the aim of the trip was to meet with airline executives, senior travel industry partners and travel media to raise the profile of WA and lay the foundations for future tourism business.
“This will be the first time a WA Tourism Minister has led a delegation to China and South Korea,” he said.
“It is essential that we maximise our presence in North East Asia and this visit will be strongly focussed on developing personal and professional relationships in those markets.
“We have invested heavily in marketing WA to the North East Asian market and I want to ensure that our investment pays off.”
The Minister will meet with a number of airlines in China, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan to encourage more direct flights to Perth, in line with the State Government’s election commitment to develop aviation access from North East Asia.
“In our developing markets such as China and Korea, we will be meeting with China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Qantas Airways, Korean Airlines, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines,” he said.
“We are spending $2million over the next year promoting WA in both China and Korea to build demand and hope that the airlines will work towards developing direct flights to cater for that demand.”
Mr McGowan said he would also open WA’s new Tourism Trade Office in Shanghai, China and launch the State’s marketing presence in Korea.
Delegates accompanying the Minister include:
officials from Tourism Western Australia;
president, Tourism Council Western Australia, Ron Buckey;
chief executive officer, Burswood International Resort Casino, David Courtney;
Chief executive officer, Perth Convention Exhibition Centre, Paul D’Arcy;
General manager, Esplanade Hotel Fremantle, Rodney Coates; and
Chairperson Australian Tourism Export Council WA Branch, Ms Noeleen Musu (Pearson).
