For the second consecutive year, the Department of Land Information (DLI) has proven to be a leader in energy efficiency.

Land Information Minister John Bowler said the department had achieved outstanding results in the second year of its Energy Performance Contract, saving $103,000 and exceeding the guaranteed amount by over $13,000.

“In the last seven years, DLI’s Midland building has had energy savings totalling $1.3million,” Mr Bowler said.

DLI has been widely recognised for its innovative energy efficiency strategies introduced to it Midland staff more than a decade ago. Since then it has received the 2003 Premier’s Sustainable Environment Award and the WA Environment Award for Energy Efficiency.

“This year, the department achieved energy savings of 1,349,157KWh which is an excess saving of 510,317KWh against the baseline year,” the Minister said.

“This year’s energy savings equates to a remarkable saving of 61 per cent.”

DLI entered into the five-year pilot contract with the national company Honeywell, with the option of extending to 11 years. The Energy Performance Contract is a first in the WA public sector.

Traditional energy-saving programs rely on switching off lights and machines, but by having one contractor responsible for building maintenance and energy savings - where they install, operate and maintain the mechanical and electrical systems to cut power consumption - an integrated approach to energy management is achieved.

“The outstanding results achieved by DLI in the first couple of years continue to provide a role model for Government agencies and DLI has already provided advice to other departments regarding energy efficiency initiatives,” Mr Bowler said.

New performance improvement measures implemented in this financial year, the third guarantee year, are expected to produce further savings and will reinforce DLI’s leadership role in energy efficiency.
