Work has begun on eight new North Fremantle housing units which have been designed to complement the heritage housing in the area.

Housing and Works Minister Francis Logan said the innovative design for the 1,597sq.m site was in keeping with the Gallop Government’s commitment to innovative, yet economically sustainable public housing.

Mr Logan said the eight single-bedroom units were designed by award-winning architects Sharp and Van Rhyn.

He said the units would help address the high demand for singles housing in the area.

Located within walking distance of Gilbert Fraser Reserve and the North Fremantle foreshore, the site at Lot 508 Turton Street was previously occupied by outmoded Homeswest rental accommodation, which has now been demolished.

“The architects have put together a stylish modern design, utilising brick, render and weatherboard capped with a colorbond roof, that beautifully reflects and complements the heritage housing in the area,” the Minister said.

“I particularly admire the way the proposed tiered, single-storey units take advantage of the sloping site.”

Builder APC Constructions submitted the winning bid of $920,200 to build the units. Construction is expected to begin next month.

Mr Logan said the North Fremantle units would be another landmark project in the Gallop Government’s approach to public housing.

Similar projects were already under way in Subi Centro, the western suburbs and the Perth CBD.

“The Gallop Government is committed to improving the quality of services to all Western Australians wherever they live,” the Minister said.
