The Mt Barker Northern Bypass will now be constructed a year ahead of schedule.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said she had taken steps to bring forward by 12 months some $4.5million in funds to enable construction of the bypass in the 2006-07 financial year.

“Providing all necessary environmental and heritage approvals are in place, construction would begin in December 2006 and the project completed by March 2007,” Ms MacTiernan said.

“Funds of $500,000 have also been made available this financial year to allow for pre-construction works to proceed.

“In addition, every effort will be made to have associated works involving the construction of a traffic roundabout linking the new bypass with Albany Highway and Woogenellup Road completed ahead of the main project in January.

“This roundabout will be located near the Mt Barker High School and there have been concerns raised locally that construction activity could compromise the safety of students.

“Under this timetable, the roundabout will be constructed over the summer holiday period and finished before the resumption of school in 2007.

“The Gallop Government is committed to ensuring regional Western Australia receives its fair share and bringing forward this project demonstrates a genuine attempt to recognise and address local needs.

“I have asked Main Roads WA to continue liaising with the high school to ensure that any matters of concern are appropriately addressed.”
