Minister determines standards for Dardanup tip

Environment Minister Judy Edwards has supported a decision by the Department of Environment to allow a private landfill in Dardanup to accept a wider range of commercial and industrial waste.

However, the tip operators will have to increase monitoring of groundwater quality as part of the environmental approval.

The DoE had recently changed the licence conditions for Kingscape Holdings Pty Ltd’s landfill to allow Class III waste to be disposed of within the most recent landfill cell at the site, as a result of its high standard of design and construction.

The Shire of Dardanup had appealed against the proposed changes. The shire was concerned about the current planning approval for the site, the management of the site and the process by which the DoE amended the licence.

“Although the department’s decision to modify the licence to enable Class III to be accepted at the site was reasonable, given the standard of construction of the facility, I have asked the department to ensure that the company reports on the implementation of an environmental consultant’s recommendations in respect to groundwater monitoring at the site,” Dr Edwards said.

“A copy of the report will be provided to the shire for its comment.”

The Minister said she acknowledged the company supported the re-establishment of a community waste management liaison group and an audit committee that would involve representatives to the community and the shire.

A liaison group did exist three years ago but had lapsed.

“Such a group provides a forum through which the company and the community can discuss issues,” Dr Edwards said.
