The Coorow Municipal Hall has a new lease of life after the State Government committed $48,780 to the collocation of the Coorow Telecentre and Community Newspaper.

Local Government and Regional Development Minister John Bowler said the money from the Regional Collocation Scheme would contribute to the renovation of the Municipal Hall.

The Regional Collocation Scheme is a key State Government initiative, providing $7.3million in funding to assist with the development of multi-functional outlets in regional communities.

“The community in Coorow will benefit immensely from this initiative,” Mr Bowler said.

“The refurbished building will accommodate the operations of the Coorow Telecentre, Magpie Squawk community newspaper, a Workbase employment service, Centrelink and Medicare EasyClaim.

“There will be shared access to meeting and videoconferencing facilities, office space, equipment and a kitchen suitable for catering.

“This project makes good use of existing infrastructure that also has historical significance to the community. Not only does it make good economic sense, but it provides residents with up-to-date accommodation and communication facilities and improved access to a range of Government and non-Government services.”

The Minister commended the Telecentre, the shire and other community groups in Coorow that had been instrumental in rejuvenating use of the hall and other local assets, such as the Roadhouse and Hotel.
